Coco Gauff secured an impressive victory over Sofia Kenin in the first round of the Australian Open, winning 6-3, 6-3. The world No. 3 overcame a challenging opening-round match by imposing her game on a solid Kenin, who simply could not keep up with the 20-year-old star.

The first set started closely contested, with both players exchanging early breaks and reaching a 2-2 tie after extended games filled with multiple break point opportunities. Gauff secured a second break in the sixth game after missing earlier chances and held onto her lead with her impressive serve, closing the set 6-3.

Gauff fired 8 aces but also committed 6 double faults, winning 71% of points on her first serve but only 21% on her second. Although Kenin played a decent match, Gauff’s impeccable performance, particularly her powerful cross-court forehands, consistently outpaced the former Aussie Open champion.

In the second set, Gauff capitalised on Kenin's serving struggles and broke her in the third game. This set saw shorter points and a dominant Gauff, who maintained control throughout, sealing the win with another break in the final game for a 6-3, 6-3 triumph.

A total of 12 aces and 9 double faults stood out for Gauff, who took risks on her serve but struggled with her second delivery. In the second round, she will face Britain’s Jodie Burrage, who defeated qualifier Leolia Jeanjean.
