The dream continues! 😎 Kerber's retirement plan put on hold once again as she defeats Leylah Fernandez 6-4 6-3. #Paris2024 | #Olympics | #tennis
The flame won’t go out on Angelique Kerber’s career as the former World No.1 has reached the Quarter-Finals of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games with a straight sets win over Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-3.
Kerber has picked up a lot of superb wins over the past few matches against Jaqueline Cristian and firstly Naomi Osaka and has now ended the run of the in-form Canadian.
Fernandez was anchoring Canadian hopes with Bianca Andreescu finding her way out of the tournament yesterday mainly due to injury as she lost to Donna Vekic who is currently facing off against Coco Gauff.
But for Kerber, her remarkable run continues. A result that will certainly buoy the German fans in attendance who were all chanting her name yesterday as she saw off Cristian.
It was a much easier win also compared to yesterday with a third set forced during her last tie. While it was a more simpler straight sets result this time around for Kerber. She now faces the winner of Emma Navarro and Qinwen Zheng with the former a set up thus far and looking likely to move through.
The first set saw Kerber and Fernandez exchange breaks with Kerber taking the pivotal break to make it 4-3. This allowed her to ease to the opening set 6-4. The second was fine margins personified as Kerber won it easy on paper.
But in reality, all games were fairly close and a break at 4-1 dealt the damage for Kerber. She lost serve again straight away but Fernandez was broken again as Kerber eased to victory.
What a fairytale it would be if Kerber ends her career with victory in the Olympic Games or at the very least a medal.
