Anna Kalinskaya has often pushed Jessica Pegula in the past but has never managed to find that cutting edge to seal the win but the Russian has found a way through on Wednesday at Internationaux de Strasbourg.
Kalinskaya came from 4-6, 1-3 down against Pegula to claim a superb 6-4, 6-2 final sets salvo to seal the win and move into the Quarter-Finals. Next up will be a certain Danielle Collins. The American took down Emma Raducanu earlier today.
Kalinskaya was 0-3 against Pegula but as Miami proved and Berlin last year, she has her number but without the wins to back it up. Every time Pegula has struggled through but this time wasn't the case.
Kalinskaya has always shown talent but unfortunately for her has struggled with illness and injury but winning the Madrid doubles title recently bouncing back after losses to Peyton Stearns and Madison Keys in the last two tournaments, she has a chance to rebuild.
It is her second top five win of 2025 and now face Collins who defends final points so has all the pressure. For Kalinskaya it will be about playing her own game and hoping it comes good.
It is a pretty wide open tournament all round with Paula Badosa v Liudmila Samsonova in the same section. The bottom half sees Magda Linette face Elena Rybakina with a potential semi-final meeting brewing with Emma Navarro.
Albeit Beatriz Haddad Maia seems to have found form literally out of nowhere so it could be a different complexion than the top names. For Pegula, it is a bad week after losing early in Stuttgart, Madrid and Rome. Her gamble to play another week has not paid off and it is firmly back to the drawing board ahead of Roland Garros.
While she won't have the fatigue of playing until the weekend, it is not the confidence booster she wants.
