Emma Raducanu decided to snub playing qualifying at the 2024 French Open next week with the former US Open champion withdrawing on Saturday ahead of the draw on Sunday which saw Sara Errani installed as top seed. But this led to a lot of questions and also criticism.
This though continued when it came to a statement posted by prominent tennis journalist Stuart Fraser. Raducanu in a fairly closed statement said that she wants to do a healthy block of training and recoup ahead of Wimbledon and the US Open which is why she has withdrawn.
She was previously seen this past week playing on hard courts instead of training on clay in London and it is another episode for Raducanu of snubbing qualifying after not getting a wildcard. Rome was a similar situation. She has not played since losing to Maria Lourdes Carle at the Madrid Open last month after making a promising start to the clay-court season.
"It’s important for me to keep laying on the foundations and I will use the time to do a healthy block before the grass and subsequent hard court seasons to give myself a chance to keep fit for the rest of the year," said Raducanu.
"So she's not injured but feels a French Open run would jeopardise her medium term fitness for the events/surfaces she feels are her best chance for success? I would have thought matches is what she needs but hopefully she knows best," a fan wrote in response. But another had a more damning verdict.
"A clever way of seemingly saying something whilst saying nothing, she's not injured, this should have been her year to prove the doubters wrong. It's clear she won't play qualifiers anywhere," wrote a fan in response to Fraser's statement. "Finding it increasingly difficult to defend Emma's decision making," another said. While further comments called her mindset awful and said she is a diva for not wanting to go through qualifying.
