Paula Badosa and
Anett Kontaveit got off their
Sydney Tennis Classic experience with a win as the Spaniard defeated Ostapenko and the Estonian defeated Zhang.
Badosa was the first one to step out onto the court and the Spaniard was determined to wash out the sour taste from last week where she really did not play too well in the singles. The opponent was more measured compared to Azarenka last week and it clearly made a difference. The first set took some time getting used to but Badosa was able to close it out in the tiebreak.
Everything became easier after that as Ostapenko fell apart completely which is not unusual for her. Badosa kept her composure, played good tennis and cruised to win the second set. In the end, a 7-6(1) 6-1 win for the Spaniard who moves on to the next round.
Joining her in the next round will be Anett Kontaveit as the Estonian made her debut in 2022. Kontaveit took on Zhang and it was an interesting matchup that heavily favoured Kontaveit and she proved it on the court. Still playing fairly decent tennis, as she did towards the end of the year, Kontaveit was able to win the first set with 6-3.
It was nothing special but she got the job done. Something similar happened in the 2nd set as well with the score being 6-3 once more. A great start for Anett who will be eager to build up some consistency for the Asutralian Open where the conditions will be perfect for her.
