Paula Badosa continued her title defence run with a strong showing against Tereza Martincova 6-2 7-6(4) moving on to the next round with Fernandez joining her after Anisimova retired.
Badosa won the 2021
Indian Wells and the Spaniard returned to the site contuining to play great tennis. Overall in 2022, Badosa has been okay at best however something seems to be working rather well for her in the Californian desert. Taking on Martincova, Badosa was able to quickly rush to the conclusion of the first set with 6-2.
The 2nd set was a very close one as she was unable to break down Martincova. The Czech player was giving it all and eventually, she forced a tiebreak. However, it still did not prove enough as Badosa once again took control of the match winning the tiebreak 7-4.
Joining the Spaniard in the next round will be
Leylah Fernandez. The Canadian is playing with a lot of confidence after her Monterrey run however so was Anisimova. The American won the exhibition prep event ahead of the main event and she continued playing well today. 6-2 was the score of the first set with the American firmly in control.
Things somewhat changed in the 2nd set as Fernandez play much better. Despite that, it was still Anisimova who was able to pull ahead a few times. She had one match point at 5-3 and three at 5-4 but converted neither. Eventually, we went into a tiebreak where Fernandez proved better forcing Anisimova to retire abruptly due to 'sickness'.
