Barbora Krejcikova has not played a match since the WTA Finals and doesn't seem likely to be playing anytime soon. She withdrew from Indian Wells and will not play yet this season. It could yet be a career long absence.

Krejcikova spoke to Sport.cz about a concerning incident which sees her fear for her career. After winning a second Grand Slam title, she went from that high to a low of collapsing during the Olympic Games.

Going from grass to clay was a challenge enough and she said she collapsed after a match but didn't want to give up as she is representing her country.

“Going from grass to clay is the hardest, and there was also very little time,” the 29-year-old told Sport.cz.

“The first day it rained, then it was hot, I played in the afternoon in the greatest heat, plus long matches. And then doubles in the evening. The next day again. My strength was decreasing very quickly.”

“I did an interview after the match, but I didn't feel well. I had to lie down, they brought me a Coke to give me energy. My head was spinning, I had cramps.

“It's the national team, a very important thing for me. I couldn't tell Katka that I wouldn't play, that's not possible, even if I had to drop out there. Which is what happened.”

She hopes to return as soon as possible but it perhaps brings back parallels having a back injury to Anett Kontaveit who had to call time on her career earlier than hoped due to the crippling back injury. As well as Paula Badosa who is the other end of the spectrum. She managed to recover and has excelled but of course it is differing sides of the coin.

“The recovery is not as fast as I hoped, but I am doing everything to return as soon as possible,” Krejcikova explained.

“I just wonder if I will ever be completely free of pain. It stresses me out.”
