Angelique Kerber will return to tennis in June albeit in a different role as the German continues her retirement and it will be as tournament director at the Bad Homburg Open. Iga Swiatek is the first name confirmed for the tournament too.
A WTA 500 tournament and a key stop on the road to Wimbledon, it takes place between 21-28 June 2025. Diana Shnaider is defending champion in one of her many titles last year during her breakthrough.
Kerber gave birth to her first daughter Liana in February 2023 returning to the tour in 2024 and she reached the Quarter-Finals at the Olympic Games in her final event before retirement.
During a star studded career which included Grand Slam triumphs, she also spent 34 weeks at World No.1 and won 14 WTA titles. Bad Homburg Open was already a tournament that she was well known for. She was an ambassador for the event and played one of her final tournaments in Germany last season there. It is more good news for her after announcing she is pregnant once more two weeks ago.
She will become a mother for the second time at the end of the year and has already added her first top talent to the line-up.
Iga Swiatek will make her final preparations for Wimbledon at the tournament as she has been confirmed as the first top name involved. It is also redemption for her after she missed out on the semi-finals in 2023 due to a fever and possible food poisoning.
She didn't play Berlin either last year which was the event she signed up for instead. But also points towards her perhaps also playing in the capital. Players kind of have a choice this year with Queen's Club hosting for the first time in 2025 to open the grass court season.
Madison Keys, Emma Raducanu, Naomi Osaka are all confirmed for that tournament so the rest will either play in Germany or the UK over the course of the truncated spell pre Wimbledon. It seems Swiatek has chosen Germany.
