Barty overcomes an inspired Zidansek to reach Madrid Open R3
The Australian has demonstrated immense mental fortitude these past weeks especially at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and she did it today as well. It all started rather well for her as she was able to hold her serve in the opening set despite having to save two break points. At 4-4, she broke Zidansek at the perfect time and proceeded to clinch the set 6-4.
It seemed like that win would propel her even further but she actually suffered a huge dip in her game in the 2nd set. At 1-1, she had four break points in total but failed to use them after which she collapsed. Zidansek went on to win the next five games clinching the 2nd set 6-1.
Barty did not look good as the 2nd set progressed and it seemed like she completely out of the match by the start of the 3rd set. But once again, her mental fortitude proved key as she was able to shake off the terrible set and start playing much better.
Zidansek was caught off guard by her improved play and Barty was able to break Zidansek taking an early 3-0 lead. At 3-1, Zidansek had two break points but Barty once again remained composed and held on. That would be the last chance the Slovene player had and Barty was able to end it with 6-3.
