The WTA rankings might see a new leader as
Aryna Sabalenka
of Belarus will look to have another go to dethrone Poland’s
Iga Swiatek.
The 22-year-old has been at the top of the ladder for quite
some time but came close to losing it in Wimbledon 2023 after suffering an exit
from the competition in the quarterfinals.
However, her closest rival Sabalenka, who just needed to book
her place in the final of the event to become the world number one, lost the
semifinal clash to Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur.
Now, the current world number two has a chance of dethroning
Swiatek from the top spot in the upcoming WTA 1000 tournaments in Montreal and
Cincinnati.
If the current world number one fails to reach beyond the quarterfinal
stage of the upcoming event and the 25-year-old wins the competition, she will
become the best women’s singles player in the world.
Sabalenka will be hoping that she will be able to achieve
the top ranking before the start of the last Grand Slam of the year where she
has a decent record, making it to the semifinals twice — in 2021 and in 2023.
On the other hand, Swiatek will be hoping that she will start
the mega-event as the top-seeded player as she will be defending her crown in
New York.
