Belinda Bencic came back to win against Angelique Kerber knocking the German team out of the Billie Jean King Cup Finals 5-7 6-2 6-2.
Germany is out of the Billie Jean King Cup Finals after they suffered their 2nd loss in the group stage effectively ending their chances to move to the quarterfinals. In the first match, it was Golubic who won Switzerland the first point after which Belinda Bencic and Angelique Kerber stepped onto the courts. It was a brilliant match that saw many twists and turns but in the end, Bencic proved better.
The first set was very tightly contested as neither player allowed a single break point in the first 10 games played. It was a remarkable thing to see especially since women's tennis tends to feature a lot of break points but each player held their serve with ease. At 5-5, Kerber started playing a little bit better and she was able to squeeze out the first set with 7-5.
The 2nd set featured a strong response by Bencic who was simply better overall. The Swiss player started hitting the ball much cleaner and Kerber's counter-punching was not as effective as before. An early break gave Bencic confidence and she added another break, later on, to win the 2nd set with 6-2. We started the 3rd set in a similar manner.
Bencic was still playing better tennis overall taking an early 2-0 lead. Kerber showed signs of life after that pulling the score back to 2-2 but Bencic once again pulled away 2-4. It was then that Kerber called for a MTO for an issue she had been experiencing. She never really recovered after that completely losing her rhytm during the timeout ultimately bowing out 2-6.
