Bianca Andreescu continues to impress in the WTA Challenger Tour and is currently on a very impressive winning streak. That is now nine matches in a row she has come out on top after reaching the final of the WTA 125 event in
Queretaro with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Carole Monnet.
The former US Open champion has not reached those glittering heights since breaking onto the WTA Tour back in 2019 with that Grand Slam and WTA 1000 success, but the 26-year-old is trying to rekindle that spark and is enjoying a fruitful period on court.
Two weeks ago,
she won the Internazionali di Rovereto over in Italy on indoor hardcourt, dropping just one set through the entirety of the tournament as the sixth seed, Dominika Salkova, was defeated 7-6(2), 6-2 to clinch a first WTA 125 title since 2019 after losing a final in Austin earlier this year.
It was a huge moment for the Canadian whose last WTA title came at the US Open in 2019. While nowhere near that level of success, it is still a significant milestone for her.
Making the trip over to Mexico, she has adapted her game on clay and continued to showcase a high level, too good for the rest of the competition. Wins over Katherine Hui, Dilatta Cherubini and Alicia Herrero Linana to set up a semi-final showdown at the Queretaro Open.
Bianca Andreescu has won her last nine tennis matches
After beginning with a hold to love, there were seven consecutive breaks of serve as neither player managed to seize full control. The breaks culminated right at the end of the first set, when Andreescu converted a second set point to move out in front.
The second set was more straightforward. Monnet broke in the sixth game before winning five points on the spin to overcome a 0-40 deficit to lead 5-2. A third set looked to be on the cards, but Andreescu had other ideas. She won the next five points without even facing a set point, taking a fourth match point in a sketchy final game to book consecutive finals.
Final opponent confirmed for second consecutive title
It will be a tantalising final against former Queen's champion Tatjana Maria. The No.1 seed has also been impressive this week in Mexico, dropping just one set, which came in the semi-final against another Frenchwoman in the form of Fiona Ferro in a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 triumph.
The pair have clashed just once in the past, all the way back in 2019. Andreescu won it 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(3) after saving two match points in the second set in the semi-finals of the Newport Beach Challenger. This was in the semi-finals, and she would prevail in the final against Jessica Pegula for a first WTA 125 title.
This significant result was the foundation she built en route to that US Open success, and these latest WTA 125 runs could be providing that next foundation to boost herself from back into the WTA Tour.
She is closing in on a return to the top 100, which will be crucial ahead of the start of 2027 with the Australian Open a possible destination. She has gained 11 places in Mexico this week so far, sitting in 118th. If she wins the title, Andreescu will rise up to 109th in the world. It is very commendable progress as she looks to put her past demons behind her.
