World no. 6 Bianca Andreecu will not compete at the WTA 1000 event in Madrid this week after a positive coronavirus test upon arrival in Spain.
Thus, the 2019 US Open champion experienced another setback, missing the previous season due to injuries and reaching the Miami Open final this March and retiring after twisting her ankle! The young Canadian passed her coronavirus tests before taking the Madrid flight, with a different outcome after landing in the Spanish capital.
Bianca feels well and will follow all the protocols and rest, hoping to hit the court again as soon as possible. Bianca had to skip the
Madrid Open in 2019 due to an injury and will have to wait for 2022 to make her Caja Magica debut and show her skills in front of the Spanish fans.
"After testing negative twice before my flight to Madrid, I was sadly informed that I tested positive upon arrival for COVID-19 and therefore will not be playing at the Madrid Open later this week. I am feeling good; I'm resting and continuing to follow the health protocols and safety guidelines. I look forward to getting back on the court very soon,"
