Rennae Stubbs expressed her opinion that ATP/WTA 1000 matches should not be extended to 5 sets after the Cincinnati Open.
The Western & Southern Open delivered gripping matches, highlighted by Coco Gauff's triumph over Karolina Muchova in the final with a score of 6-3, 6-4, and the remarkable showdown between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, resulting in a title for the 23-time Grand Slam champion with scores of 5-7, 7-6(7), 7-6(4).
Having witnessed two consecutive Masters 1000 tournaments with only a week's gap before the US Open, Rennae Stubbs, former coach of Serena Williams, voiced her opinion that matches should remain in the three-set format due to the physical demands posed by these tournaments:
“Seriously. I know you’re all going to yell at me, but man this is enough! Can u imagine if they had to go two more sets!???? The way the game is played now with these rally’s, best of three is good!,” Stubbs wrote
“NO ONE NEEDS 6 hour tennis matches! No one!!!! Also i could squash your argument with some sets being lopsided. What was dramatic was the TB and the 5th set.”
“If it was a slam final they would! If this was the us open we would be talking about it in 10 years,” she added.
The same world No. 1, Iga Swiatek, had previously called for reconsiderations from the WTA to ensure that the physical demands allow players to maintain their pace. During the Cincinnati week, there were several withdrawals throughout the tournament, including Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Holger Rune, Elena Rybakina, and Marie Bouzkova.
This week, most of the players who will compete in the main draw of the US Open will have days of rest and preparation for the final Grand Slam of the year. Both in men's and women's categories, the tournament will feature the battle for the world No. 1 ranking, with Djokovic and Alcaraz in the men's section, and Swiatek and Sabalenka in the women's.
