Caroline Wozniacki seemed to have an ace up her sleeve so to speak during her win over Leylah Fernandez as with the schedule basically complete and darkness descending on SW19, she was forced to switch court mid match.
Former World No.1 Wozniacki who won through 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in a win that confounded her want for a wildcard prior to the tournament and showed that there is some life in her comeback. She now faces Elena Rybakina.
But perhaps it would've been a different story had she not got her wish in the first place. She spent almost half an hour when it was locked at 3-3 in the decider asking the umpire to suspend the contest. Her wishes were granted shortly before 9pm.
But instead of perhaps getting the suspension to the contest that she wanted to be played the following day, the organisers thought about the heavy rain due on Friday and decided to shift it to Court One. Without a heavy slate on Thursday due to the men's doubles on Centre Court which perhaps would've seen Wozniacki v Fernandez in that slot anyway, they were able to move.
It also wreaked havoc though for Wozniacki who has her kids with her on site. She had to use her phone during the suspension to call their nanny to look after the kids until she got back in a pretty unprecedented move. They walked out under the roof almost an hour later. Wozniacki made sure they didn't hit curfew either.
She saved two match points before taking down the Canadian. She thought it was the right call to change venues. But perhaps would've thought differently if she lost or was in Fernandez' shoes as the defeated player. “I wanted to play today. I wanted to finish the match, win or lose. I wanted to get it done today because it's supposed to be maybe raining tomorrow. I just thought it was very hard to see outside. I didn't know there was a possibility to play on Court 1 or Centre, but when the opportunity was there, I mean, I thought it was great.”
