Three-times
Wimbledon
champion
Chris Evert discussed the unique benefits that come with winning the
prestigious SW19 trophy during a BBC broadcast. The former world No. 1 was
commenting on the final where
Barbora Krejcikova defeated
Jasmine Paolini.
Evert, now 69,
accumulated 18 Grand Slam singles titles throughout her career, including three
at Wimbledon. Speaking with English broadcast journalist Clare Balding, Evert
surprised her by revealing the exclusive perks that former champions enjoy,
such as free tickets to the tournament.
"It changes your
life when you win Wimbledon," said Evert. "Unlike any other Grand
Slam tournament, Wimbledon is so global. That was also the year I won with
Jimmy Connors and we were engaged, so it was the love double, and I was getting
twice the amount of press because of that,” the 3-times Wimbledon champion
added.
“It was very front
page! Everywhere. But you go down in history and you get to be a member of the
All England Club. You get free members' tickets every single day. I still get
free tickets every day, I love it!"
"You didn't know
that? I get two members' seats, and good seats! Everyone who wins this
tournament." Balding, eager to find out more, exclaimed: "Oh my God,
you must have more friends than anyone," to which Evert confirmed:
"They pop up! They pop up out of nowhere."
Winning the Wimbledon
title grants players automatic membership to the All England Club, placing them
in an exclusive group of members. They are entitled to exclusive seats on
Centre Court and have special access to tickets and club facilities.
Founded in 1868, the
club is limited to 500 full members, including lifetime and honorary members,
chosen periodically by a committee. Members can also enjoy meals at the club
and access the facilities to relax and socialize.
