Clara Tauson delivered an impressive performance against Sofia Kenin at the ASB Classic, firing 26 aces to claim the fifth-highest aces record in a singles WTA match. The Danish world No. 50 secured a hard-fought two-hour and 45-minute battle with a 4-6, 7-6(7), 7-6(3) victory.
In the first set, Kenin gained an early break and maintained control throughout, without giving up any break opportunities. The former Australian Open champion seemed on track for victory with two consecutive early breaks in the second set, building a commanding 6-4, 3-0 lead while serving.
However, Tauson mounted a comeback, capitalising on Kenin's serving inconsistencies to claw her way back into the match. Once the game reached the deciding set, Tauson’s serve truly shone, with 9 aces in the first set, 2 in the second, and a staggering 15 in the third. This performance placed her in the top five for most aces in a single match.
The current record of aces is held by Kristyna Pliskova, who struck 31 aces against Monica Puig in the second round of the Australian Open. Despite this, the Puerto Rican emerged victorious, winning 4-6, 7-6, 9-7.
Interestingly, the second-highest ace total also belongs to Pliskova, who fired 28 aces against Puig a few years later in the second round of the Luxembourg Open. Yet again, Puig claimed victory with a 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-6(6) scoreline.
Sabine Lisicki’s 27 aces during her 6-1, 7-6(4) victory over Belinda Bencic at the 2015 Birmingham second round remains the record for a two-set match. Caroline Garcia matched this total at the 2022 Japan Open but fell to Shuai Zhang, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7.
Tauson’s next challenge will be in Thursday's quarterfinals against the winner of the match between Jaqueline Cristian (No. 85) and Madison Keys (No. 21).
