Former Puerto Rico’s tennis star
Monica Puig has defeated
America’s
Venus Williams in an exhibition match.
The 29-year-old announced retirement in 2022 surprising a
lot of tennis fans as she was still very young at that time.
Earlier in August, it was announced that Puig would face the
former world number one in an exhibition match with the title of "Battle
of Legends" on September 16 at the Puerto Coliseum Rico in San Juan.
Not surprisingly, the contest was sold out where Puig emerged
victorious with a score of 7-5, 4-6 and 10-5.
Puig announced in April last year that she would bid farewell
to the sport because of her consistent struggle with fitness concerns.
The San Juan-born, who played at the highest level for just
under nine years, did not really produce the kind of impact that was expected
of her.
In the Grand Slams, her best outing was playing in the fourth
round of Wimbledon 2013 where she was knocked out by America’s Sloane Stephens with
a score of 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Perhaps, the highlight
of Puig’s career came in the 2016 Olympics where she ended up winning the Gold
medal after beating Germany’s Angelique Kerber in the final of the event with a
score of 6–4, 4–6, 6–1.
