Three-time champion Kim Clijsters has been awarded a wild card entry to the upcoming US Open, which begins on August 31.
The Belgian triumphed at Flushing Meadows in 2005, 2009 and 2010 but retired from tennis for the second time in 2012. She came out of retirement early in 2020 and is currently unranked, having played just two matches this year.
Joining Clijsters will be several Americans, highlighted by
CiCi Bellis and
Caroline Dolehide. Bellis is known for her stellar performance at the 2015 US Open, where she upset No.12 seed Dominika Cibulkova as a 15-year old. The 21-year old has been plagued by wrist injuries in recent years and is looking to rediscover her form.
Dolehide is more of a doubles specialist, although she has been making progress in singles. She reached the doubles semifinals at last year's US Open and the quarterfinals at the 2020
Australian Open. Furthermore, the 21-year old was a participant at the recent
World Team Tennis exhibition event, representing the
Philadelphia Freedoms.
