The fourth day of action at the
Palermo Ladies Open had 4 clear favorites to advance to the quarterfinals. Those were the seeded players
Petra Martic,
Anett Kontaveit,
Dayana Yastremska and the Italian ace,
Camila Giorgi. None of them disappointed fans in Italy as three performed a perfect come back.
The fourth-seeded Estonian played the first match of the day against Laura Siegemund. The German took the first set after 43 minutes, winning it 6-3. However, Kontaveit dominated in the remainder of the match when she managed to win the following two sets 6-2 and win the match in more than 2 hours.
Also the first-seeded
Petra Martic was one of the players that needed a come back in order to advance to the quarterfinals in Italy. 29-years-old Croat faced qualifier Liudmila Samsonova in her 2nd round match. The 21-years-old Russian showed a great fighting spirit when she managed to win the first set 7-5 and got within 2 games of winning the match. However, Martic showed her experience and won the match after 2 hours and 25 minutes 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
As if there were not enough comebacks for one day, also the home crowd favorite, Camila Giorgi scared their fans for a while. The Italian lost the first set to another qualifier Kaja Juvan. However, Giorgi controlled the rest of the match as she triumphed in another more than 2-hour spectacle 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
After 3 long matches, the last match of the day began 15 minutes before midnight.
Dayana Yastremska probably made all of the officials and ball boys happy when she triumphed 6-2, 6-4 in just 78 minutes, and ended a long day in Italy.
