Gauff on the stretch.
Coco Gauff battled past Karolina Muchova in three sets to advance to the Quarter-Finals of the Australian Open on Sunday. It wasn't exactly easy for the reigning French Open champion but she managed to maintain what has become a perfect Head to Head record over the Czech.
Gauff won the US Open in 2023 and the French Open last year and so is on the lookout for a title that would bring her one away from a career Grand Slam which she could feasibly claim this summer at Wimbledon.
She raced to a 5-0 lead in the opening set before closing it out 6-1. In the second set after they exchanged breaks, Muchova managed to break again in the fourth game and from there she held and then sealed the set 6-3 to really put the fright into Gauff and make her produce some of her best.
It is the first set that Muchova has ever taken from Gauff in their five career meetings. Albeit it remained unbeaten for Gauff overall as she managed to take the final set. At 1-1 in the deciding set, Gauff won 12 out of the next 13 points to go into a 4-1 lead. Despite resistance from Muchova in doing so, she held firm to seal a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win in just under two hours.

Svitolina or Andreeva await

She will make her third consecutive appearance in the Quarter-Finals of the Australian Open. She reached the semi-finals back in 2024 losing to Aryna Sabalenka but fell last year in the Quarter-Finals to Paula Badosa. She is also the youngest American woman to reach three or more consecutive singles Quarter-Finals at the Australian Open since Mary Joe Fernandez back in 1990-1993.
It is the sixth consecutive year too that Gauff has reached a Grand Slam Quarter-Final. She is the youngest woman to make it for six or more years since Martina Hingis and Venus Williams between 1996-2002 and 1997-2002.
It is a tenth Quarter-Final at a Grand Slam with three in Melbourne and five at the French Open as well as twice at the US Open. Only really Wimbledon has been a bit of a bust for the American. She converted 50% of her break point chances too on Sunday breaking Muchova on eight occasions. Muchova converted 40% of her break point chances going 2/5 but it was only enough for the second set which was a first in itself but also wasn't the win that she wanted.
Next up is either Mirra Andreeva or Elina Svitolina who face off shortly with Sabalenka v Jovic being the other Quarter-Final set today. Gauff holds a 4-0 lead over Andreeva so will prefer to play her while she has a 2-1 advantage over Svitolina winning their last two.
