Coco Gauff
has surpassed her compatriot
Jessica Pegula in career prize money, despite
having played nine years less than her.
Both
leading figures in American women's tennis qualified for the WTA Finals due to
their outstanding season performances, with Gauff ranked as World No. 3 and
Pegula as World No. 5 before the year-end tournament featuring the top eight
players of the year.
The
19-year-old Gauff recently overtook her fellow American, Pegula, in career
prize money despite having nine fewer years in her career.
Gauff's
rapid progress has had a significant impact on her total earnings, which
currently amount to approximately £9.48 million (equivalent to $11,526,713
dollars). This impressive amount surpasses Pegula's total earnings, which
amount to around £8.83 million (equivalent to $10,736,246 dollars) over her
career.
Since her
debut in 2018 at the age of 14, Gauff has won three WTA 250 titles, a WTA 500
title, a WTA 1000 title, and a Grand Slam at the recent US Open, with the last
three achieved in just the past month.
In Pegula's
case, she can boast two WTA 250 titles and two WTA 1000 titles, in addition to
reaching five finals, not including her new final appearance at the WTA Finals,
where she eliminated Gauff in the semifinals.
When it
comes to the year's major prizes in Grand Slam tournaments, Pegula has a record
of 39-20 in these events, with her best results being six quarterfinal
appearances spread across the four Grand Slam tournaments.
On the
other hand, Gauff has an improved record of 44-16, and in addition to her title
at the US Open, she reached the final of the 2022 French Open and made it to
the quarterfinals three times.
The tennis
players faced each other in the semifinals of the WTA Finals on Saturday,
November 4th, and Pegula secured the victory to advance to the final. She is
still waiting for her opponent, which will be determined in the match between
Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka.
