Coco Gauff survived against a very inspired Magda Linette advancing to the 2nd round of the US Open with a 5-7 6-3 6-2 comeback win.
Coco Gauff was able to pull out a win that seemingly looked far away at a point in the match against Magda Linette. The Polish player is playing in great form recently but arrived in New York late after playing in Cleveland. Linette looked sluggish to start and had to save break points. However, somehow she was able to stay in the match.
At 3-4, she lost her serve to give Gauff the 5-3 lead but the American completely threw away the lead losing 4 games in a row to lose the opening set 7-5. It was a very unexpected collapse by Gauff who became nervous suddenly. Disaster looked upon her as she found herself down 0-2 early in the 2nd set.
A bit of dropoff in the level of Linette allowed Gauff a chance to crawl back into the match and she did making it first 2-2 and then taking the 5-2 lead. In the end, Gauff was able to win the 2nd set with 6-3 giving her a badly needed confidence boost. After that, it was all easier for Gauff.
She took a quick 2-0 lead in the 3rd set adding another break one game later. The 4-0 lead eroded a bit midway through the set but Gauff was able to stay ahead. The American ultimately closed out the match with 6-4 in the final set against a tired Linette.
