With the US Open kicking off on Monday, retired American pro Stan Smith believes that although Novak Djokovic is still the favorite to lift the title, it will be very difficult for the Serbian.
The World No.1 is hoping to be the first man in the Open Era to complete the calendar Grand Slam, after already winning the other three Majors earlier this year. Smith believes Djokovic is capable of this feat, however it would come at a heavy price.
“It’s hard. It’s going to be hard for Djokovic,” Smith said. “He’s a heavy favorite, he’s committed to do it. He’s not saying, ‘Well, maybe…’. He’s really committed to do it. Unless he gets hurt, he’s the heavy favorite.”
The two-time Grand Slam singles champion added he was surprised neither of Djokovic's greatest rivals, Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal, had completed the calendar Grand Slam in their career.
“Nadal and Federer are certainly capable and they’ve won three in a year,” Smith said. “I am surprised that one of those guys hasn’t been in that position.”
