Angelique Kerber survived a very inspired effort from Yastremska while
Barbora Krejcikova defeated Astra Sharma to move on at the
US Open.
A couple of great 1st round matches happened today at the US Open. In the first Angelique Kerber took on
Dayana Yastremska and the German player somehow was able to pull out a win. Yastremska took the first set with 6-3 with some stellar play but could not replicate it in the 2nd set.
Kerber won the 2nd set with 6-4 but found herself down early in the 3rd set. At 5-4 Yastremska played a terrible service game failing to serve out the match and giving Kerber a chance. The German would use it to win the match in the tiebreak 7-3. Overall a great win for Kerber who won 3-6 6-4 7-6(3).
Joining her in the 2nd round will be Barbora Krejcikova who took down Astra Sharma in straight sets 6-0 6-4. Krejcikova came out focused in the match smashing Sharma with her precise shots from the baseline. The Australian was not able to find any rhytm and Krejcikova won the first set with 6-0. The 2nd set started off well for Krejcikova once more.
She took an early 2-0 lead and never let go of it closing out the match later. Sharma found some rhythm late but Krejcikova was clearly the better player and had no issues advancing.
