Ashleigh Barty was playing a good match against
Coco Gauff and leading when she decided to retire from the match.
The world number one was able to overcome a slow start against Coco Gauff to take the 1st set but early in the 2nd set, the Australian was forced to retire. The result was 6-4 2-1 when the rain started to fall again and Barty retired. Before the game was due to start, Barty had a quick chat with the physio after which she retired due to a right arm injury.
It was an unfortunate end to the match as Barty was once again playing a great match leading the American phenom 6-4 2-1. The decision probably came due to the impending Roland Garros which is due to start in 14 days.
For the young American, this is the biggest result of her career as it's her first Masters 1000 semifinal. That will propel her into the top 30 at the mere age of 17. She has enjoyed a stellar week in Rome, beating Madrid Open Champion and world number four Aryna Sabalenka before advancing today due to retirement.
She will face either Iga Swiatek or Elina Svitolina for a place in the final.
