Despite entering the Internazionali BNL d'Italia Rome off six consecutive losses,
Reilly Opelka seems to have found his rhythm as the American booked his spot in his maiden ATP Masters 1000 semifinals on Friday.
The World No.47 surprised even himself as he hit 18 aces to power past Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis 7-5 7-6(2), securing his spot in the final four on his least preferred surface.
"I am surprised to reach my first Masters 1000 semi-final here. Clay is not really my thing," Opelka said in his post-match interview. "It is not much of an American thing. It is probably just a fluke, but I’ll run with it.”
The 6'11 giant has yet to drop serve this week, tallying an impressive 77 aces to just four double faults on his way to the semifinal.
“I’ve definitely served well. I hit my spots really well today, especially in big moments,” Opelka said. “I think that has been critical. I have stayed calm [and on] big points, I have delivered.”
Awaiting Opelka in the semifinals is nine-time champion
Rafael Nadal, who will be facing the towering American for the first time on the ATP Tour.
