After a day off unlike many other players, Coco Gauff returned to action on Sunday at the Miami Open and made light work of Oceane Dodin weathering an early storm to seal her spot in the fourth round for the second time in her career in a 6-4, 6-0 win.
The US Open champion has only been defeated by Maria Sakkari in her last 23 matches on home soil having flawless records in Washington, Cincinnati, US Open and Miami over the past year showing that home is certainly where the heart is.
Gauff though was under fire in the opening few games before pouncing on errors from her opponent who could not take the chances presented to her. She went 4-2 down to Dodin and from there won 10 straight games. Next will be the winner of Caroline Garcia or Naomi Osaka.
Dodin's chances went after she had the opportunity to go 5-2 up. She missed two break points and that seemingly got to her as she went 40-0 up in the next game and threw it away allowing Gauff to break serve and it was fairly academic from there to seal the set. The second even more so with Gauff's serve which is usually the part of her game that is a bit suspect shining with Dodin not able to get a look in barely. Gauff only lost three points in a set behind her serve as she eased to victory in little over an hour.
It is the old adage of take your opportunities or you get punished and Dodin was case and point as the Frenchwoman unlike Clara Burel who nearly defeated Gauff last week in Indian Wells didn't get a chance to do so when perhaps it would've been different had the chance to go 5-2 up gone in. But Gauff now moves on without a great deal of fuss.
