Coco Gauff
delivered heartfelt words during the award ceremony after securing her maiden
WTA 1000 title at the Cincinnati Open.
The young
American tennis sensation emerged as the standout performer of the week at the
Western and Southern Open. In a thrilling final on Sunday, she overcame
Karolina Muchova with a score of 6-3, 6-4, claiming her first-ever WTA 1000
victory at the age of 19.
Gauff's
emotions were palpable during the award ceremony as she reflected on the
journey she has undertaken at her tender age to achieve this remarkable feat.
She eloquently expressed:
"This
is unbelievable. Especially after what I went through in Europe earlier this
summer. I'm just happy to be in this moment. I’d like to thank my Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ. I spent a lot of nights alone, crying trying to figure it
out. I still have a lot to figure out, but I thank him for covering me."
Ascending
to the world No. 6 ranking, Gauff has exhibited remarkable improvements throughout
the US Open series, boasting an impressive 11-1 record since the commencement
of the hardcourt swing.
Merely two
weeks prior, she clinched her first WTA 500 title at the DC Open, triumphing
over Maria Sakkari in the final with a commanding 6-2, 6-3 scoreline.
Taking a
well-deserved break this week, Gauff will use the time to prepare for her
upcoming appearance at the US Open, where she enters as the 6th seed. Her best
result in the tournament to date is reaching the quarterfinals last year, which
means she has a substantial number of points to defend.
In the
previous year's competition, Gauff bowed out in the quarterfinals against the
French player Caroline Garcia with a score of 6-3, 6-4. With her recent
successes and her steadfast dedication to improvement, Gauff's future on the
court continues to shine brightly.
