The 2022
Australian Open runner up drop her racquet to celebrate, without realizing that
the match wasn’t over yet In any
Grand Slam, emotions can be many, and in this case especially for Danielle
Collins, former finalist of the AO, who celebrated early in the third
set-tiebreak. After losing the first set 6-7 against Karolína Muchová, she recovered
to take the second set 6-2, and in a hard third set they had to close the match
with a tie-break.
The score
was 6-3 with Collins serving, who closed the seventh point with a strong
down-the-line backhand that forced his opponent's error. A great joy for the american,
who drops her racket and walked to the net thinking the match was over. However,
she didn’t know that the tie-break of the last set is played to the best of 10
points, which she took with humour after speaking with the chair umpire.
After the
match she said: “I was a little embarrassed. I guess I just never had to play a
tie break in the third set in a Grand Slam, so I thought the match was over”. Also,
the world No. 11 added that: “I just told myself, ‘Well, at least you didn’t
faceplant or something on the floor’.
She also
highlighted the importance of public support in Melbourne: I don't think if I
was doing anything else people would be waiting outside of my work saying, 'Go
Danielle'. I really appreciated it, it's so cool to share that with a lot of
the fans.
Ultimately,
Collins won by a score of 10-6, and advanced to the third round, in a match
that lasted two hours and 50 minutes. The Czech showed great resistance from
the back of the field and did not let his rival find a good rhythm, however Collins
managed to win the match and continue on his way in Australia. Her next rival? The
former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybákina.
