Danielle Collins (No. 15) had to battle against Jaqueline Cristian (No. 73) to advance to the Madrid Open round of 16 with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory. The American staged a remarkable comeback to extend her winning streak to 15 matches.
Collins continues her impeccable form, following consecutive titles at the Miami Open and Charleston Open. In her 13 matches between both tournaments, she had to come back from a set down only once, while in Madrid, she did it against Olga Danilovic in the opener and now against Cristian.
In the first set, the Romanian was nearly untouchable with her serve, hitting 64% of first serves and winning 94% of them, while Collins stood at 74%, winning 64% of hers. Cristian's service effectiveness was crucial in denying any break opportunities to her opponent.
Collins also played excellent service games, but in the sixth game of the set, her inconsistency and errors allowed Cristian to break serve, securing the set 6-3.
In the second set, both players continued to dominate their service games, although they gradually improved in return, especially Collins, who had a couple of wasted break opportunities throughout the set. With the score 5-4 in her favor, Collins capitalized on the third break point she had to claim the second set 6-4.

However, in the third set, the Romanian couldn't maintain the high level of the previous sets. While she defended her first service game, saving a break point against her, she struggled to maintain effectiveness in her service games, winning only 45% of the points.
Collins maintained her level during the third set and won five consecutive games, capitalizing on the only two break opportunities she had in that span to comfortably close out the set 6-1 and advance to the fourth round of the tournament. The former Australian Open finalist reaches a 2024 record of 28-7 and will face the winner of the match between world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka and teenager Robin Montgomery (No. 183).
