Australian Open finalist
Danielle Collins secured her spot in the round of 16 at the
San Diego Open on Monday night, defeating
Caroline Garcia in a battle that could have gone either way.
Collins recorded a 6-2 7-6(4) victory over her French opponent, overcoming seven double faults in a match that saw both ladies struggle with their serves. Although the American was inconsistent on her second serve, she capitalized on her huge first serve. Collins won 23 of 30 points behind her first serve, and this enabled her to keep Garcia at bay.
After losing her opening serve, Garcia was unable to mount a counter attack as she was quickly overwhelmed by Collins' power in the opening set. However, the Cincinnati champion was able to regain some momentum in the second set, as both ladies exchanged breaks of serve before a tiebreak finally ensued. It was here that the American's steady play, coupled with Garcia's inconsistent second serve, allowed Collins to escape with the victory.
Hoping to build some momentum as the season draws to an end, Collins will face Italian
Martina Trevisan for a spot in the quarterfinals.
