It was not a happy return to the courts for Leylah Fernandez whose game was taken apart by Daria Kasatkina en route to a 6-2 6-2 win.
Fernandez did not play since the US Open and it wasn't a very good time for her on the court. Struggling with the typical slow start that players experience after a long layoff, she never found a good rhythm in this one. Kasatkina knew exactly what to do to win the match.
She mixed well and forced Fernandez to hit many balls and the out-of-rhythm Canadian never got his timing right. Far too many mistakes for her as she tries to find her form after the ankle injury. Kasatkina triumphed the last time she played in California (San Jose) and she had a good time in this one.
Her opponent greatly helped her but is simply a bad matchup for Fernandez. Very strong defensively with the ability to play long rallies so Fernandez was always going to be in trouble, especially in this spot. Exactly one hour after the first point was played Kasatkian finished off the job 6-2 6-2.
The Canadian will get a chance to go to Guadalajara early and practice ahead of the WTA 1000 event. She won two career trophies on Mexican soil in the past.
