Russia’s young tennis sensation Mirra Andreeva has secured yet
another achievement in her career. The 17-year-old is already regarded as one for
the future after having secured some impressive results in the early phase of
her young career.
Andreeva has continued to shine on the court, this time in Beijing
where she cemented her spot in the quarterfinal of the event after beating Poland’s
Magda Linette in the round of 16 in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-3. She
became the joint-youngest player in the history of China Open to cement a spot
in the last-eight. The previous youngest was the former world number one Maria
Sharapova who achieved the milestone 20 years back in 2004.
Andreeva is going through a fabulous 2024 season, where she
has now won 26 out of 38 matches. Before the China Open, Krasnoyarsk-born played in the quarterfinal of five events, winning on two occasions and suffering thrice in the process. She won the quarterfinal of the French Open
after beating current world number two Aryna Sabalenka with a score of 6-7, 6-4,
6-4. She also won the last-eight contest of the Lasi Open, where she got the
better of Croatia’s Lea Boskovic in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-0.
On the other hand, Andreeva lost in the quarterfinal of the
Brisbane International to Linda Noskova in straight sets with a score of 7-5,
6-3. She then came second-best in the quarterfinal of the Madrid Open against Belarus’
Sabalenka in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-4. Andreeva’s most recent loss in the quarterfinal of the mega-event came in the Cincinnati Open against the reigning world number one in women’s tennis, Poland’s Iga Swiatek, with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Andreeva will now face the winner of the match between China’s
Qinwen Zheng and America’s Amanda Anisimova in the last-eight clash of the
competition.
