Ekaterina Alexandrova defeated
Jelena Ostapenko 7-6(4) 6-0 in Seoul to win the 2022 Hana Bank
Korea Open.
This was a highly anticipated final due to the playstyles both of these players have. Neither wants to play long rallies and both can attack and do it so well and that's what we saw. Alexandrova was favoured to win the match simply because there is always that doubt with Ostapenko.
She is excellent when things go well but she's also capable of beating herself and that's what she did here in the second set. The first one was a close as we saw many breaks. Ostapenko opened with an early one but got broken right back.
A few more saw the Latvian be up 5-3 however she once again gave it back to Alexandrova. Ultimately we ended up in the tiebreak where a composed Alexandrova proved better winning 7-4. The second set was completely botched by Ostapenko as she rushed as was simply out of it. She could not recover from losing the opening set after being up a break three different times.
Due to that, she rushed in the second, spamming the ball all over the place and Alexandrova cruised 6-0. The second set lasted only 24 minutes.
