Kazakhstan’s tennis star
Elena Rybakina achieved another
milestone in her relatively young career.
The 24-year-old is a one-time Grand Slam winner as she
lifted Wimbledon last year after beating Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in the final with
a score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Rybakina became the only women’s singles player to win two
WTA 1000 events this year.
In March, she won the BNP Paribas Open after beating the
current world number one Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets with a score
of 7-6, 6-4.
Later, she clinched the Italian Open in May after being
awarded a walkover against Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina.
While the recent results did not go as per plan for Rybakina,
she would be pretty pleased with being the only player to win two WTA 1000
events.
Rybakina has had a mixed year at the highest level where.
She played in the main round of all the Grand Slams and managed to qualify for
the quarterfinal or beyond on two occasions.
Her best outing was in the Australian Open where she
finished as the runner-up after losing to current top-ranked WTA player
Sabalenka with a score of 4–6, 6–3 and 6–4.
She later also played in the quarterfinal at Wimbledon where
she lost to Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur with a score of 6-7, 6-4, 6-1.
