Elena Rybakina has pulled out of the
Wuhan Open because of injury; the tournament has been confirmed after she was upset by the World No. 118 at the China Open earlier this weekend.
Rybakina lost out to Alina Charaeva in three sets in the second round of the China Open in Beijing. Rybakina is next scheduled to compete at the Ningbo 500, where she is the defending champion. Last year in the
Wuhan Open, she reached the quarter-finals, meaning she dropped those points.
"I'm very sorry to the fans who were looking forward to seeing me play," Rybakina said in the Instagram story. "I'll take some time to rest and recover. Thank you for your understanding and continued support. See you next year."
What makes Rybakina's season even more special is that she was dealing with a lingering lower leg injury during the US Open, but she still managed to win the title.
Rybakina deals with long-standing issue
She had to retire during the quarter-finals in the Cincinnati Open against Iga Swiatek and had both a leg and foot injury throughout the US swing. She managed to recover well enough for the US Open, where Rybakina won her third Grand Slam title.
She captured the world No. 1 ranking and became the first player to qualify for the
WTA Finals at Indian Wells. Through the race, she and Aryna Sabalenka are already qualified. Rybakina joins Amanda Anisimova, Madison Keys, Emma Navarro and Karolina Pliskova as pre-tournament withdrawals. The Wuhan Open is due to take place between October 12 and 18 and is the final WTA 1000 tournament of the season.
