Emma Raducanu advanced to the fourth round of the Miami Open for the first time in her career after her opponent, McCartney Kessler, retired at 6-1, 3-0. The 2021 US Open champion is enjoying one of her best weeks since her triumph at Flushing Meadows, reaching the Round of 16 at a WTA 1000 event for only the second time in her career.

The former world No. 10 had recently claimed her first win against a top-10 player on hard courts with a remarkable victory over Emma Navarro in a tough third-set tiebreak. The Brit has now guaranteed a ranking climb to world No. 52 and is just one win away from returning to the top 50 for the first time since 2022.

Raducanu in control with flawless first set

Raducanu started strong, breaking Kessler's serve right away to take an early lead, though she couldn't hold onto the advantage, losing her serve in the following game. With the score at 1-1, the former US Open champion took clear control of the match.

Kessler never looked comfortable on court and struggled with her service games, winning only 25% of points on her first serve and 20% on her second. Raducanu secured four consecutive breaks and comfortably held her own service games to wrap up the set 6-1 in just 30 minutes.

Raducanu takes control before Kessler retires

It was a smooth day for the Brit, who started the second set once again with a break, followed by solid service games and a fifth consecutive break to go up 3-0. However, Kessler began to experience back discomfort — which she had apparently been feeling throughout the match — and ultimately decided to retire, handing Raducanu the victory and a place in the fourth round.

Raducanu will face the winner between Amanda Anisimova (17th seed) and Mirra Andreeva (11th) in her next match, as she aims to reach a WTA 1000 quarter-final for the first time in her career.
