Emma Raducanu played only four WTA-level events in 2021 however she still has a great chance of securing a spot at the WTA Finals in Guadalajara.
Most of that comes from the fact that her two best results in 2021 have come at Grand Slams. She secured a solid number of points during the summer when she reached the 4th round of Wimbledon. The majority of her point come from winning the US Open where she earned 2040 points. The top 8 players in 2021 will earn a spot at the WTA Finals which will be held in Guadalajara instead of Shenzen.
The decision came because of the pandemic but if Raducanu earns a place it would be another ridiculous achievement for the 18-year old who was ranked 338th in the World she she received a wild card entry into Wimbledon. Raducanu is currently ranked 16th in the Race but she is only trailing number 8 by 400 points.
As a player that has not played on the tour in the past Raducanu has essentially no points to defend and everyone she earners will go into her overall tally. With an improved ranking she will be able to enter main draws with ease and she would only need a couple of good results to gather the necessary points.
A couple of things could fall her way as well with Ashleigh Barty hinting she might not play at the WTA Finals as well as Naomi Osaka withdrawing from the Indian Wells Masters. Osaka has yet to confirmed whether she will play at all in the rankings so if that two skip over the event lower ranked players will have a higher chance of booking a spot.
Either way, exciting times are ahead for Raducanu fans and the phenom who will return to action presumable at the Indian Wells Masters in two weeks.
