Gael Monfils is through to the
Moselle Open quarterfinals to the joys of many native French fans with a 7-6(2) 6-4 win over Kohlschreiber.
The French player continued playing well ever since finding his form during the North American swing taking down a savvy veteran in Kohlschreiber. Despite the result suggesting an easy win it was hard-fought in a match that last over 90 minutes. Both Monfils and Kohlschreiber played well early one thanks to some stellar serving.
The German faced 3 break points at 3-3 but ultimately saved them all to hold on. We ended up in a tiebreak where Monfils finally found a breakthrough winning it 7-2. A very close set but Monfils got the deserved win in the end as he was slightly the better player.
The Frenchman continued playing well early in the 2nd set breaking his opponent but the German would fight back to tie it up. After that, we saw good moments from both but Monfils was simply better. He had the crowd behind his back and it clearly proved pivotal in this match as the German faltered in pressure situation.
Monfils won the 2nd set with 6-4 to clinch the victory and move to the quarterfinal to the joys of the crowd. A very solid win for the Frenchman who is finally back to playing good tennis and smiling on the court after a very rough start to the year.
