Olympic Gold Medalist Belinda Bencic lost in not such a good match, to teenage sensation Emma Raducanu.
Emma Raducanu is not done yet in New York as the British phenom took down Belinda Bencic 6-3 6-4 to move to her maiden grand slam semifinal. The story of Raducanu has been a rather unbelievable one and her run at the US Open is very impressive considering how her Wimbledon journey ended. Showing composure and bravery Raducanu won another match handling the pressure very well after many questioned her ability to do so not very long ago.
The match started off with some nerves admittedly as Raducanu misfired a few balls early. Bencic took a 2-0 lead but she would not hold on to it for long. As the British player started hitting more and more shots her confidence grew exponentially. From 1-3 down, Raducanu went on a 5-0 winning spree to close out the first set with 6-3. She blasted 3 aces, 13 winners and committed 7 errors out of which the bulk came early.
Bencic was shaky to close out the set never quite feeling any rhythm and committing many errors. She was very vulnerable on her 2nd serve as well, especially when Raducanu started hitting winners. The 2nd set featured a change in approach for Bencic tho decided to be much more aggressive than initially. It worked to some degree as Bencic started hitting some winners but the errors were there as well. On the other side had a rock-solid opponent who did not give away much.
Raducanu broke Bencic midway through the 2nd set to take a 4-2 lead. She would allow several chances for Bencic to come back into the match but the Swiss player was just dreadful overall with the only thing getting higher as the match went on was her frustration. Never found a rhythm, poor returning, poor serving, bad decisions in big points, all of it plagued the Swiss and ultimately lost her the match.
