Emma Raducanu couldn't
continue her remarkable campaign at
Wimbledon, falling in the Round of 16 to
Lulu Sun, but the three consecutive wins she accumulated have allowed her to
secure a more comfortable position in the WTA Ranking, climbing over 40 spots
to re-enter the top 100 after 15 months.
The 2021 US Open
champion concluded an impressive grass swing with a 7-3 record, reaching the
semifinals at the Nottingham Open, the quarterfinals at the Eastbourne
International, and the fourth round at Wimbledon. The 21-year-old Brit was
outside the top 200 just a month ago but now heads into the upcoming hardcourt
swing in America with a new status.
Raducanu reflects
on positive Wimbledon experience
Raducanu's first week
at SW19 brought back memories of her US Open title run. She defeated Renata
Zarazúa in the first round, then
Elise Mertens (No. 33) and the 9th seed Maria
Sakkari, all in straight sets. She achieved her second top-10 win against the
Greek player (whom she also defeated on her way to the Flushing Meadows title
three years ago).
“I beat two top-10
players within two weeks, which is a pretty big deal for me, seeing as the
whole US Open even I didn’t play one top-10 player,” said Raducanu after her
defeat at Wimbledon.
“I think I have to take
confidence from that. Six months ago, when I was starting out after surgery, I
would have signed for the fourth round at Wimbledon. Of course, I’m
disappointed. Of course, I want more. I think everything does happen for a
reason. It just fuels the fire and makes me more hungry.”
Once Wimbledon
concluded, Raducanu will appear at world No. 94, having moved up 41 positions.
Additionally, the Brit No. 1 does not have any points to defend for the rest of
the year, meaning she will continue to rise over the coming months. In fact, in
the WTA Race (which only counts points earned in 2024), Raducanu is at No. 44:
“You don’t want things to happen too easily and too quickly. I had that before.
I don’t necessarily want just a massive spike.”
Raducanu’s next
challenge will be at the WTA 500 Washington Open, where she received a wildcard
from the organization. It won't be an easy draw for the Brit, who will face
opponents like Aryna Sabalenka, Daria Kasatkina, Ons Jabeur, Madison Keys,
Paula Badosa, and Anna Kalinskaya.
