British sensation
Emma Raducanu can add one more accolade to her already growing list of accomplishments, as the 19-year old is the recipient of the WTA Newcomer of the Year Award.
This award was voted on by members of the international media, with previous winners including
Venus Williams (1997),
Serena Williams (1998) and
Naomi Osaka (2016). Raducanu made her presence known on the grand stage when she reached the fourth round of the 2021 Wimbledon championships, which was her first Major tournament.
The teenager then proceeded to shock the world by winning her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open, securing entrance as a qualifier no less. Furthermore, she did this without dropping a set.
Following her stellar performance, Raducanu rose to World No.23 in the WTA rankings, before ending her season ranked at World No.19. Furthermore, she also won the British Sportswoman of the Year award, and is scheduled to compete at an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi at the end of the year, before entering the
Australian Open with a huge target on her back.
