Emma
Raducanu (No. 250) delivered a stellar performance to secure an easy victory of
6-2, 6-3 against
Rebeka Masarova (No. 96) in the first round of
Indian Wells.
The 21-year-old British tennis sensation made her fourth appearance in the main
draw at the Tennis Paradise, and for the fourth time, she advanced to the
second round of the tournament.
Masarova, a
23-year-old tricky opponent who entered the main draw with momentum from the
qualifying rounds, including a victory over Linda Fruhvirtova, couldn't pose
much of a challenge to Raducanu, who seems to thrive in the California desert.
Raducanu
broke Masarova's serve early in the match and with impeccable serving, took a
2-0 lead. Despite the Spanish player facing difficulties, especially on her
second serve, and saving four break points against her, Raducanu secured a
second consecutive break to go up 3-0.
Although
Masarova recovered one of the breaks in the next game, Raducanu maintained
control, capitalized on her opponent's errors, and ultimately claimed the set
6-2.
In the
second set, Raducanu hit the ground running, seizing her first break
opportunity to take the lead. With a solid service game, she overcame a 0-40
deficit and further solidified her advantage. The 2021 US Open champion secured
another break as soon as the opportunity arose, quickly establishing a 3-0
lead.
Similar to
the first set, Masarova managed to break back in the fourth game, but she never
asserted superiority over her opponent. Raducanu showcased a versatile range of
shots and aggressiveness, particularly from her backhand, while the Spanish
player tried to resist from the baseline.
Ultimately,
Raducanu secured one final break in the ninth game, closing out an impressive
performance with a 6-2, 6-3 victory and advancing to the second round of Indian
Wells. Her next challenge won't be easy, as she is set to face the 30th seed,
Dayana Yastremska, a recent semifinalist at the Australian Open.
