Emma
Raducanu will be part of the Great Britain
Billie Jean King Cup team in the
upcoming tie on April 12th and 13th. The 2021 US Open champion joins Katie
Boulter, Harriet Dart, and
Heather Watson alongside captain Anne Keothavong.
Raducanu
had a good week in
Indian Wells and advanced to the third round, showing
increasing consistency in her comeback. The 21-year-old defeated Rebeka
Masarova 6-2, 6-3 in the first round and faced the 30th seed Dayana Yastremska
in the second round, where she advanced after leading 4-0 and a walkover from
the Ukrainian.
Raducanu
was eliminated in the third round against world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka with a
score of 6-3, 7-5, but left a good impression in terms of the level she can
display.
The British
player needs to have at least one nomination to the Billie Jean King Cup team
if she wants to participate in the Olympic Games representing Great Britain. To
do so, in addition to competing in said tournament in the previous 12 months,
the top 56 ranked players qualify, with a limit of four representatives per
country.
Currently,
Raducanu is ranked No. 237 in the Race to the Olympics, although a good
performance in the upcoming tournaments can bring her closer to potential
Olympic participation.
Team
captain Anne Keothavong expressed her pleasure with the nominated team to face
France in mid-April: “I'm delighted to be traveling with a full-strength team
off the back of some terrific results recently. The French side will present a
significant challenge as always, but we all know how representing GB inspires
us."
