The Asian swing of the 2025 season will feature the China Open, one of the biggest tournaments on the WTA Tour that has seen several esteemed champions lift the distinguished trophy.
A WTA 1000 event, the China Open will be held at the China National Tennis Center in Beijing, and is slated to run from September 24-October 5, 2025. The outdoor hard court event will see a 96 singles players and 32 doubles teams compete in front of an appreciative crowd.
During it's 21-year history, several World No.1's have lifted the prestigious trophy. The likes of WTA legend Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Caroline Wozniacki and Naomi Osaka have all left Beijing with the highly sought-after hardware in their hands.
American tennis prodigy Coco Gauff emerged victorious at last year's edition, defeating Czech star Karolina Muchova in the final. The Atlanta native will return at this year's event, although she will have to get past a very talented field if she hopes to retain her title.

Sabalenka withdraws, Swiatek and Gauff lead the way

World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka was due to lead the field in Beijing, with the Belarusian hoping to finally get her hands on that elusive trophy. The two-time Australian Open champion lost in the quarterfinals in 2023 and 2024 but she withdrew with a minor injury.
Polish superstar Iga Swiatek won the Beijing title in 2023, and the Wimbledon champion will have to face stern opposition if she hopes to reclaim the title. Americans Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys are scheduled for the event, with compatriots Emma Navarro and Amanda Anisimova joining the field.
Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina has been confirmed for the Beijing Open, with Italy's Jasmine Paolini and 2024 runner-up Muchova also scheduled to compete. China's Qinwen Zheng will hope to have recovered from elbow injury in time to compete in front of her home fans. Below is the list of entrants.

Predictions

Samuel Gill, Head Editor of TennisUpToDate.com sees Iga Swiatek as leading from the front when it comes to this next week.
Iga Swiatek will be favourite to scoop the title in Korea this weekend and likely will be in Beijing next week. She has taken a bit of a different approach to others and is seemingly wanting to make up for lost time after spending most of last season at this point banned.
Swiatek has the World No.1 in her sights despite of course the usual don't care but still going for it narrative that often develops. No Aryna Sabalenka. But Jessica Pegula has performed strongly in Billie Jean King Cup Finals and I'd pick a smorgasbord of top names from those involved in the past few weeks to shine.
