Canadian tennis star
Eugenie Bouchard is set to return to
the court for the
Canadian Open. The WTA 1000 event will be played in the city of
Canada from August 06 to 12, and some of the best players in the world will battle to secure the ultimate prize.
Bouchard, who has been out of court for a long time doing various things, is now set to participate in the mega-event. The
30-year-old recently played in the ITF / USTA W75 event, where she secured some important wins that guaranteed her a spot in the Toronto Open. Bouchard
was knocked out after being forced to retire from the quarterfinal clash
against USA’s Kayla Day.
Before that competition, the Montreal-born Bouchard took part in the Guadalajara Open in September 2023, where she lost in the round of 32 to Veronika
Kudermetova with a score of 6-2, 6-7, 6-4. After that, Bouchard announced that
she would play in the Pickleball version and became the first high-profile player
to play both versions at the same time.
Bouchard was once regarded as the next big thing, especially
at the start of her career. She had a fabulous 12 months in 2014, where she was
simply unstoppable at times. It was that year when Bouchard played in the
final and two semifinals of the Grand Slam events. However, since then, the former world number five has only managed to play once in the quarterfinal of a Grand Slam, which was in the 2015 Australian Open, where she lost to former world number one Russia’s legendary tennis star Maria Sharapova in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
Not only that, Bouchard has not managed to play in the main draw of a Grand Slam since the 2020 French Open. She faltered five times in the qualification round since then, and the most recent of those disappointments came in the 2023 US Open, where she was knocked out from the second round of the qualifying phase.
