Naomi Osaka overcame a solid effort from Elise Mertens to advance to the
Miami Open quarterfinals for the first time.
Naomi Osaka has been enjoying a great 2021 where she is yet to lose a match. The only match she lost was at the start of the Australian summer where she pulled out of the event. In Miami, she is yet to lose a set and she is looking formidable. After booking a spot in her first Miami Open quarterfinal she said:
"It feels really exciting. As a kid, I grew up watching players play here.
She then clarified it a bit more in depth by saying:
"It definitely feels very special. This is one of my favorite tournaments to play, and of course, I'm sad I hadn't been able to get to the second week the last times that I have played this tournament."
Osaka improved her H2H record against Mertens to 3-1. It also improved her overall record to 23 consecutive match wins which is quite absurd. Osaka seems very comfortable in Miami and playing at this event. Her hope is to go all the way which is certainly able to:
"But I'm here now, and hopefully it will go well this time."
A very humbling statement but it's quite clear what the true meaning behind that is. With the number one spot in reach as well she will certainly be on her best. Her next opponent will be Maria Sakkari a player who has played sensationally at this event as well.
