As the WTA season resumes in full swing, Leylah Fernandez joined the ranks of WTA titlists following her victory over Viktorija Golubic in the final of the Abierto GNP Seguros, held in Monterrey, Mexico.
The Canadian teenager prevailed with a commanding 6-1 6-4 victory, and claimed her first WTA singles title without dropping a set. Fernandez seems to play well in Mexico, as the 18-year old was a runner-up in Acapulco last year.
"I just tried to do my best, and tried to use the emotions that I felt last year in the Acapulco final as fuel to get the win, and it definitely helped today," Fernandez said.
Despite being the youngest player in the main draw, the Canadian showed little sign of inexperience as she dominated her Swiss opponent to clinch the title in an hour and 30 minutes.
"The last game basically, especially the last two points, I was very nervous there," revealed Fernandez. "But I just tried to calm myself, just think about the moment, and try to execute the plan as best as I can. I’m happy that the balls went in for me."
