Only the best four players remained in fight for the title at the Palermo Ladies Open after quarterfinal matches on Friday.
Entering the quarterfinal matches on Friday,
Petra Martic,
Anett Kontaveit, and
Dayana Yastremska were the last three seeded players at
Palermo Ladies Open. However, the fans in Italy were supporting home wild-cards Elisabetta Cocciaretto and
Sara Errani but also
Camila Giorgi.
And once again
Petra Martic kicked-off the day in Palermo. The first-seeded Croat faced
Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the quarterfinals. Sasnovich was playing a great tournament and she showed it also in the match against Martic when she got close to winning the first set. However, she later lost it in the tie-break, and the second set saw the same story as Martic triumphed 7-6(5), 7-6(3).
Once again only 19-years-old Elisabetta Cocciaretto showed her great qualities. However, this time it was not enough for the win as she faced the fourth-seeded
Anett Kontaveit. The Estonian won the first set 6-1 in just 26 minutes. And despite the Italian fighting back in the second set, Kontaveit triumphed in the last set 6-1 again to book her semifinal spot.
Another Italian wild-card experienced Sara Errani enjoyed her last day at the tournament when she faced
Fiona Ferro in the quarterfinals. Ferro didn't experience any major difficulties during the match and triumphed comfortably 6-4, 6-1 in 90 minutes.
The last match of the day featured a lot of drama, quality tennis but also a happy ending for Italian fans. Dayana Yastremska won the first set 6-4 and let already 5-3 in the second set. Later, she also had 2 match points, however, she didn't convert those and Giorgi managed to come back to win the match 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3.
